Die Cederberg Rooibos Kunstefees neem ‘n blaaskans in 2015

Clanwilliam – 23 Februarie 2015.

The Cederberg Rooibos Arts Festival takes a breather in 2015

Clanwilliam – 23 February 2015. The annual Cederberg Rooibos Arts Festival which usually takes place in the heart of the Rooibos country in Clanwilliam in April, will not be hosted this year.  At a recent committee meeting which was attended by all stakeholders, it was decided to take a breather this year, says Ilse Lochner, festival organiser.

“Although insufficient funding and sponsorships have become a real challenge in recent years, prompting this year’s decision, another contributing factor was the fact that Clanwilliam, one of the ten oldest towns in the country, experienced a very busy and exciting year with its 200th anniversary,” says Lochner.  “The 200 year celebrations which included a Festive Table in Clanwilliam’s oldest street and other highlights such as the Clanwilliam Birthday Bash and Clanwilliam 200 Quilt, required substantial additional resources, manpower and funding.  It therefore makes sense to take a break after a demanding year, in order to re-look the Cederberg Rooibos Arts Festival and make necessary changes in keeping with the festival’s evolvement and changing requirements”.

Since its inception in 1997, the festival, originally known as the Leipoldt Festival, honoured the renowned doctor, writer and poet C. Louis Leipoldt, who grew up and spent many years in Clanwilliam.  An icon of Afrikaans culture due to his many talents and literary prowess, the festival has evolved into a two-fold celebration honouring Leipoldt’s literary work as well as the food and culture of the region. Over the years, the festival has become a highlight on the region’s annual calendar and has expanded to include contemporary music, literary work and theatrical performances by well-known musicians and performers.

Enthusiasts who appreciate and enjoy Clanwilliam and its people can however look forward to an interesting line-up in 2015, including the renowned annual Wild Flower Festival at the end of August, the popular 29th annual Freshpak Fitness Festival in October, Clanwilliam Expo (16 to 18 April) and the South African Heritage Symposium (15 to 17 October).
